    • Ronald L. Caravan has been on the faculty of the Syracuse University School of Music since 1980 where he teaches clarinet and saxophone and directs the Syracuse University Saxophone Ensemble. He earned the Performer’s Certificate on clarinet from the Eastman School of Music, as well as the Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education and Master of Arts in Music Theory. As a performer, Dr. Caravan has broad experience as a solo and chamber-music recitalist and as a clinician. He has occasionally performed with the Syracuse Symphony, now Symphoria, as a saxophonist as well as a clarinetist. He is recorded in performance with several saxophone chamber groups, the Syracuse Symphony, and the Society for New Music. More recently, he and area pianist Sar-Shalom Strong have collaborated on a multi-volume set of CDs, representing a wide range of clarinet and saxophone repertoire, that will be released in the near future. As a composer, Dr. Caravan has several works published for clarinet and saxophone, and is particularly well known for his music and teaching materials dealing with unconventional sound resources on the single-reed instruments. His clarinet-choir experience began as a freshman music major at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1965 when a select group of clarinet students under the direction of Dr. William C. Willett recorded an LP album of clarinet-choir repertoire. He has since directed clarinet choirs at the college level at Syracuse University and elsewhere. Dr. Caravan is presently Woodwind Review Editor for the “New York State School Music News.” He also has developed and markets a line of clarinet and saxophone mouthpieces specially designed for “classical” performance.

    • Monk Rowe has composed and arranged music for a variety of ensembles including the Utica Symphony, the Fredonia Alumni Jazz Ensemble, and the Jewel Winds Quintet. He is an Instructor of Saxophone at Hamilton College, and Director of the Fillius Jazz Archive. In this capacity he has conducted over 300 videotaped interviews with jazz artists across the country. Monk works frequently as a saxophonist and pianist and has recorded two CD’s of original music. Visit monkrowe.com

Silverwood Clarinet Choir – 12 Extraordinary Clarinetists with conductor, Pamela Mastrobattisto

What is a clarinet choir? The Silverwood Clarinet Choir is made up of 12 talented clarinetists who play many different kinds of clarinets that you may not have seen. If you love variety, the ensemble will present many different styles of music. Can “Rhapsody in Blue” be played without a full symphony and piano? Who was Lucien Calliet? Why did he write innovative compositions for clarinet choir in the 1950’s? What rising young stars are arranging for this ensemble? Listen to their signature piece, “Silverwood”, that was written by an English composer who writes for the BBC. Would you like to hear a march? Perhaps a Klezmer piece? Silverwood music will simulate your imagination, keep your toes tapping and warm your heart. Join us for an entertaining and educational concert!
